Historically, the Valley of the 1000 Hills has been a neglected area, and long-term poverty has resulted in high infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, unemployment, and the breakdown of family life, which leads to hopelessness especially among young people. Unemployment is now at 41% overall and 60% among youth, and 55% of people live below the international poverty line, reflecting a worsening economic reality.
